However, a physiotherapist can guide you through the rehabilitation process following surgery, help you understand your surgeon’s protocols and instructions clearly, and provide exercises to maximise function and strength while minimising any complications or chances of reinjury.

Chatswood Allied Health have extensive experience in providing post-operative rehabilitation for most major surgeries including but not limited to ACL surgery, knee arthroscopies, rotator cuff repairs, knee, hip and shoulder replacement, post fracture open reduction surgery. Rehabilitation is provided on an appointment by appointment basis. We will keep your surgeon up to date on your progress.

CASTING / BRACING / CAMWALKER BOOTS

CASTING / BRACING / CAMWALKER BOOTS

CAST

A cast is required to immobilise a bone following a fracture or surgery. They are usually made from 2 types of materials: Plaster of Paris, or Fibreglass. At Chatswood Allied Health, we use fibreglass to make our casts. Although it is slightly more expensive, it is durable and firm, providing better protection compared with a plaster cast.

Fiberglass casts are also waterproof. The price for a fibreglass cast on the arm is $160. Some of this cost may be covered by a private health fund.

Please notify our staff when booking if you require a cast.

You will need to bring a referral from your Doctor and the XR and report if available.

Cam Walker Boots

Cam Walker Boots are used to immobilise the foot and ankle following injuries or surgeries to allow healing to occur. Cam Walker Boots are also known as Moon Boots or Fracture Boots.

Cam Walker Boots are used to manage ankle sprains, foot/ankle fractures, and also following foot/ankle surgery. Cam Walker boots come in different sizes, long or short, and can be adjusted to allow for limited amount of movement, or no movement at all, depending on the Doctor’s Recommendations.

Chatswood Allied Health has Cam Walker Boots available.

The cost of a Cam Walker Boot (including fitting) is $160.

Bracing

Braces can be used to provide temporary support for the structures around joint or muscle, and can also provide temporary relief from pain.

Chatswood Allied Health has a variety of wrist, lower back, ankle and knee braces in stock. Other braces can be ordered and delivered into the store for you!

MOTOR VEHICLE ACCIDENTS / WHIPLASH

Motor Vehicle Accidents can be very stressful for a person, as they have to deal with loss/damage to their vehicle, and potentially injuries in worse scenarios. Due to the complex nature of whiplash injuries, recovery can be slow if it is not managed correctly and early. An experienced physiotherapist will help manage these injuries and help you return to your usual life pain and stress free.

Before your come in for your appointment, you should bring:

Report your accident and injuries to the CTP insurance company of the at fault vehicle. If you were at fault, you will report your injuries to your CTP insurance company.
A medical certificate and referral from your doctor outlining the injuries and advising Physiotherapy as part of your management plan
Any other relevant scans and reports from your doctor or specialis

If you’ve just had an accident and aren’t sure about the other party’s claim number or insurance company, there is an easy way to get in contact with the insurance company and receive a reference number immediately!

Search up SIRA – Who do I claim with? On Google click on the link (https://www.sira.nsw.gov.au/claiming-compensation/motor-accidents-injury-claims/from-1-december-2017/who-do-i-claim-with)
Scroll down to the bottom and click on “Connect with the Insurer”– this will load up another page and form (https://sira.force.com/public/s/ctp-connect)
You will need to fill out your details, the accident details and also some details from the other party/parties. It is very important to get drivers licence details and number plates/registration of the vehicles involved! This form will help you identify the insurance company under which you will claim for your injuries!
Within two business days, you will be contacted by the insurer, and a claim number will be organised for you.
In the meantime, organise an appointment with your doctor – they will identify your injuries, complete a medical certificate for you.

Tech Neck

Tech Neck

Tech neck is generalised neck pain and stiffness that arises due to the consistent use of mobile or electronic devices in a poor posture.

Symptoms:

Symptoms of tech neck are exactly the same as generalised neck pain. They include:

Pain, stiffness or tightness in the joints or muscles around the neck.
Headaches
Pain, altered sensations or weakness of muscles down the upper arm.

Causes/Risk Factors:

Using your mobile phone consistently with a poor posture puts a lot of strain and pressure on the neck, increasing the risk of neck pain and impingement occurring. As seen from the graphic below, when we look down on our phone, much more force and weight is placed through the joints and muscles in our neck. As posture becomes poorer and the neck bends further forward, more and more weight is placed through our neck. This cycle continues and symptoms arise or continue to worsen.

Tech neck is not limited to mobile phone use. Computer or laptop use can cause symptoms of tech neck too if they are set up incorrectly for your posture. As we can see in the photo below, the man is hunched forward on the computer, putting a lot of pressure on his neck. Consequently, due to the neck being too far forward, the shoulders have rounded as well, which will cause problems of their own related to poor posture.

Management of Tech Neck

The easiest way to manage, prevent, or minimise the symptoms of tech neck is to minimise time on electronic devices like the phone or computer. With the phone, there are strategies which you can use to prevent the effects of tech neck. These include, but are not limited to:

Hold your phone at head level without having to bend your head forwards.
When browsing the internet or watching movies etc use a computer or TV rather than your phone
Use the phone purely as a communication device, avoid its use as much as possible.

Managing tech neck on the computer is a little more difficult. The computer and desk will need to be set differently from person to person to ensure optimal posture. Below is a photo that provides cues to help set up your computer or laptop for the optimal position.

Once symptoms arise, it is recommended you bring yourself in for a physiotherapy appointment. A physiotherapist will help ease the pain, stiffness and tightness around the neck, and prescribe exercises to help strengthen the muscles which stabilise your neck.
