Massage Therapy is a form of manual therapy to help promote recovery, wellbeing and higher performance.

General Benefits of Massage Therapy

Massage therapy itself consists of a variety of techniques and forms that are used for different purposes. These will be discussed below.

Types of Massage Therapy

Remedial Massage: More in depth compared with regular massage. A massage therapist will choose specific techniques that will be best for you, based on your chief complaints/primary problems. This form of massage is especially handy in chronic conditions or long term injuries, where ongoing management and relief from symptoms is required.

Sports Massage: Sports massage can be used to help promote circulation and enhance muscle performance prior to a sporting event. It can also aid in recovery and reducing muscle soreness after a sporting event.

Deep Tissue Massage: Deep tissue massage involves applying firmer pressure and slower strokes than normal massage, in order to reach deeper soft tissue structures. Deep tissue massage is commonly used for stiff muscles and joints, and chronic aches and pains.

Trigger Point Massage: Trigger point massage involves applying pressure over specific points where the muscle is tender and causing tightness. The muscle usually ties into a knot, which can be felt as a nodule if palpated firmly. Trigger points can often be the source of aching and tightness, and the basis of this form of massage is to reduce these symptoms by eliminating these trigger points.

Swedish Relaxation Massage: Swedish relaxation massage focuses more on calming the nervous system and improving circulation, with a secondary benefit of relaxing and reducing tension and tightness in the muscles. Also, it stimulates the lymphatic system, helping your body remove waste products a lot quicker and easier.

Exercise helps to improve flexibility, restore muscle strength, endurance and power. It also plays a major part in preventing re-injury. A thorough assessment allows our therapist to address any deficiencies that may increase risk of re-injury. We will also look at the requirements of your sport and provide a functional rehabilitation program.

Exercise Physiology for Workcover and CTP injuries:

Chatswood Allied health Exercise Physiologists are Workcover and CTP accredited. They are trained to provide functional exercise prescription designed to return injured workers back to work as quickly as possible. Exercise rehabilitation provides a good transition from Physiotherapy to returning an injured worker to demands required of their occupation.

This may range from postural exercises and stretches for an office worker to a gym program that may be required for an occupation that involves a lot of strenuous activity.

A long-term program will be set up to help reduce the probability of re-injury.

What is Shockwave Therapy?

Shockwave Therapy is a non-invasive treatment that involves creating a series of low energy acoustic wave pulsations that are directly applied to an injury through a person’s skin. It is used to treat a wide range of pathologies, usually chronic conditions such as, tendinopathies, plantar fasciitis, muscular trigger points/myofacial pain, and facet joint.


Physiological Effects?

  • Reversal of Chronic Inflammation.
  • Stimulation of collagen production.
  • New Blood Vessel formation.
  • Dissolution of calcified tissue.
  • Release of trigger points in the muscle.

How does it work?

Shockwave Therapy delivers acoustic waves to the damaged tissue to kick start the body’s natural healing process. There may be a slight feeling of discomfort during the treatment, depending on the level of pain the patient is already experiencing in the area. However, since the treatment lasts only about 10 minutes, most patients are able to tolerate this discomfort. Additionally, the intensity of the treatment can be adjusted throughout the session.

Will I feel any pain after the treatment?

Most patients will experience an immediate pain relief following the treatment. However, within 2–4 hours after the treatment, they may experience some soreness in the treated area. This soreness has been reported as tolerable and not limiting.

Will Shockwave therapy help me?

Most patients with chronic pain problems have been through various unsuccessful types of treatments. Up to 80% of the same patients worldwide report that Shockwave therapy has helped them eliminate their problem. It will depend on your condition, your physiotherapist will do a thorough assessment to decide whether Shockwave is recommended for your condition.

How many treatments will I need?

The number of treatments varies depending on the indication and tissue response. The effect of the treatment is cumulative, so you will typically need 3–5 treatments. Very often though, you will experience relief right after the first treatment.

Are there any restrictions after the treatment?

It is recommended that patients refrain from physical activity, especially one that would involve the treated region, for about 48 hours following each treatment session.

ACUPUNCTURE

Acupuncture may be accompanied by massage, heat, or electrical stimulation. You will be assessed first to determine which techniques will be most effective and appropriate.

Acupuncture first originated in China, and is believed to be one of the oldest practices of traditional Chinese medicine. Acupuncture has become more popular in Australia, and when performed by a skilled therapist, it is a safe and viable alternative to help manage a range of conditions.

Cupping Therapy

Cupping involves the placement of small sized cups onto the surface of the skin. These cups create a vacuum effect. The suction/vacuum effect created sucks the skin and underlying tissue up. Cupping therapy is believed to cause inflammation at the area, signalling the body to start its repair processes. These cups can be moved along the muscle fibres to help relax tight muscles.

Cupping has been around for thousands of years, like acupuncture, and is a technique used in traditional Chinese medicine.

There are some benefits to cupping therapy: it can improve joint range of motion while reducing pain, especially in back and neck pain. Cupping can also be used following surgery, to help break up the scar tissue underneath the skin that develops and contributes to pain and stiffness.

The suction created by the cups will leave purple bruises on the body. However, these resolve within 3-5 days.
